The Servant Songs Trail
The four canonical Servant Songs of Isaiah — and the Anointed One’s Commission Christ read at Nazareth. Each Song names a phase of the Servant’s office. Walked in sequence, the pattern emerges in full: chosen, called from the womb, taught the morning-by-morning ear, exalted through marring, anointed to proclaim the Jubilee.
First Song
יְשַׁעְיָהוּ מבIsaiah 42The Chosen Servant
Behold my servant — upheld, chosen, Spirit-anointed. Justice to the nations without breaking a bruised reed. Quoted in Matthew 12:18–21.
Second Song
יְשַׁעְיָהוּ מטIsaiah 49Called from the Womb
Pre-mortal foreordination. The polished shaft hidden in the quiver until the appointed hour. A light to the Gentiles — quoted in Acts 13:47.
Third Song
יְשַׁעְיָהוּ נIsaiah 50The Morning Ear
The tongue of the learned, the morning-by-morning ear. Back given to the smiters, face not hid from shame and spitting. The vindicating Father near.
Fourth Song — Prologue
יְשַׁעְיָהוּ נבIsaiah 52 · vv 13–15The Servant Exalted
52:13–15 — Behold my servant shall deal prudently. Raised, lifted, very high. The triple ascent. The chapter division at 53:1 is artificial; the unit is 15 verses long and begins here.
Fourth Song — Body
יְשַׁעְיָהוּ נגIsaiah 53The Suffering Servant
Despised and rejected. Wounded for our transgressions. The chapter the apostolic tradition cites more than any other Isaiah passage — Acts 8, 1 Peter 2:24, Mosiah 14, Matt 8:17.
The Anointed One
יְשַׁעְיָהוּ סאIsaiah 61The Anointed One's Commission
The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me. The acceptable year — the Jubilee. The passage Jesus stopped mid-verse on at Nazareth (Luke 4:18–19), holding back "the day of vengeance" for the Second Coming.
The Servant pattern continues in this dispensation. The Songs are read forward — the canonical pattern, not localized to any specific person.
