Three Personages, One in Will
Father, Son, and Holy Ghost — the order beneath the names
The Godhead is three distinct Personages who hold the keys of power, with one presiding over all. Behind the familiar names lies a precise order of origin: the Father, the Son who is Jehovah-made-flesh, and the Holy Ghost who is His Servant.
If you saw the heavens opened right now, how many Beings would you see — and which One would be speaking?
- 1Three Personages, Not One Blur7 min
Start with what Joseph saw, not what creeds assert. "Any person that had seen the heavens opened knows that there are three personages in the heavens who hold the keys of power, and one presides over all" TPJS 419:2. That is the Restoration's flat refusal of the creedal fog — not one substance in three masks, but three real Beings. The Father has a body of flesh and bones; the Son also; the Holy Ghost is a personage of Spirit so He can dwell in us D&C 130:22. Press the class: these are persons, with intellect and will, one in mind and purpose — exactly as Jesus prayed His disciples would be one TPJS 419:2.
- 2The Order of Origin7 min
Now go beneath the names. We worship Jehovah — the covenant God of Israel who took on flesh as Jesus Christ. He is the Firstborn: "I was in the beginning with the Father, and am the Firstborn" D&C 93:21. Even He "received not of the fulness at the first" and grew grace to grace D&C 93:14. The Holy Ghost is His Servant — the One who descended as a dove, who points us not to Himself but to the temple of His God. So the prayer pattern is fixed: we address the Father, in the name of the Son, and the witness returns by the Holy Ghost.
- 3Why It Matters for You6 min
This is not trivia. The Holy Ghost "may descend upon him and not tarry with him" D&C 130:23 — His companionship is conditional on our walk. Knowing the three as distinct Persons changes prayer from vague spirituality into covenant relationship: you speak to a real Father, through a real Mediator, and a real Servant testifies. Ask the class where their prayers have drifted toward a generic "God" and invite them to restore the order.
- 1D&C 130:22
“The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man's; the Son also; but the Holy Ghost has not a body of flesh and bones, but is a personage of Spirit. Were it not so, the Holy Ghost could not dwell in us.”
Teaching noteUse this to dismantle the one-substance creed. Ask: why must the Holy Ghost remain unembodied in this dispensation? Because He must dwell in us. - 2D&C 93:21
“And now, verily I say unto you, I was in the beginning with the Father, and am the Firstborn;”
Teaching noteAnchor the Son's identity as Jehovah, the Firstborn. Draw out that even He received the fulness grace-to-grace, not all at once. - 3D&C 130:23
“A man may receive the Holy Ghost, and it may descend upon him and not tarry with him.”
Teaching noteLand the application: the Holy Ghost's companionship is conditional. Ask what causes Him to tarry — or to withdraw.
Another way to look at this: Alma 13 in its earliest reading describes a three-tier order of origin — the Most High Father (El Elyon), the Only Begotten (Jehovah), and the Son of the Only Begotten (the Holy Ghost, the One Like Unto). The Servant who parted the Red Sea and was the Angel of His Presence in Isaiah 63 is this same Holy Ghost — not an impersonal force but a Person with a history of mighty acts in Israel.
- 1What exactly does D&C 130:22 say is different about the Holy Ghost, and why does the text give that reason?
- 2If the Son is Jehovah and the Holy Ghost is His Servant, how does that reshape the way we understand prayer — to whom, through whom, by whom?
- 3Where has your own prayer drifted toward a vague 'God,' and what would change this week if you addressed the Father specifically, in the name of Christ?
This week, pray the restored pattern deliberately — address the Father, pray in the name of Jesus Christ, and listen for the witness of the Holy Ghost — and notice how naming the three changes your relationship with each.
