Doctrine & Covenants
Jehovah addresses William W. Phelps directly, naming him called and chosen before any ordinance is administered. The sequence is precise: baptism with single-eyed intent, remission of sins, reception of the Holy Ghost by laying on of hands, then ordination to the eldership by Joseph Smith — a clean demonstration that priesthood in the Holy Order is conferred hand to hand, not self-assumed. A secondary ordination follows for a distinct labor: assisting Oliver Cowdery in printing and preparing books for the instruction of children in the covenant community. William is then directed to journey to the land of inheritance — the gathering place — to plant that work there. Joseph Coe receives the same directive; remaining assignments are deferred to the Lord's timing.
