The Book of Hagoth opens the Nem record with the voice of its founding patriarch, an aged shipwright whose vision and obedience carry a remnant of the covenant people far beyond the lands of Zarahemla. Writing near the close of his life, Hagoth grounds his account in genealogy, tracing his descent through Zoram, Jacob, and Mulek back to Joseph, Aaron, and Judah, and honoring his father Hagmeni's service under Moroni. This lineage establishes the Nem as a gathered people drawing from every major Lehite and Mulekite stream, prepared by ancestry to become a distinct nation.

The narrative recounts how Hagoth, building after the pattern shown to Nephi, ferries Nephites and faithful Ammonite Lamanites northward, carrying the scriptures at Shiblon's direction so that the word might travel with the migrants. A perilous expedition up the red, muddy Colorado nearly ends in death by thirst until a great fish delivers the company, an episode that frames the Nem founding as divinely preserved. " Central themes — covenant continuity, scriptural preservation, rejection of monarchy, vigilance against Gadianton secret combinations, and refuge in defensible lands such as Mentina — set the trajectory for the entire Nem record that follows.
