Hagoth, now aged, opens his record by tracing his lineage through Zoram, Jacob, Mulek, and ultimately Joseph, Aaron, and Judah, and recalling his father Hagmeni's service alongside Moroni. Trained as a builder in wood, he constructs ships after Nephi's pattern, transporting Nephites and converted Ammonite Lamanites northward by both seas. Guided by Shiblon's inquiry of the Lord, the migrants carry copies of the scriptures to preserve faith.

Hagoth leads twelve Nephite and twelve Lamanite families up a muddy red river (the Colorado), enduring near-fatal thirst until a great fish miraculously delivers them. Reaching fertile country, they found cities, including Hagothah, and refuse kingship, instituting a council of judges elected by the women. " Nephi son of Helaman ordains Hagoth's sons Hagmeni and Ameliki to root out Gadianton combinations.

Later, fearing surrounding robbers, the Nem divide, Hagoth settling the defensible mountain valley of Mentina.
