THE FIRST BOOK OF MORONI
Chapter 3
Premium narration
1
Moroni introduces a new section of his record, announcing his intention to abridge the history of an ancient people who once inhabited the northern lands and were ultimately swept away by divine judgment. He explains that his source is the set of twenty-four plates recovered earlier by the people of Limhi, a record attributed to the prophet Ether. Moroni notes that the earliest portion of that record covers the creation, Adam, and the generations leading up to the great tower, but he chooses to omit this material, reasoning that comparable accounts are preserved among the Jews and remain accessible to any future finder of the plates themselves.

His abridgment will therefore begin at the time of the tower and follow the people forward until their destruction. The chapter functions as a brief editorial preface, establishing the scope, source, and limits of what is to come.
