THE FIRST BOOK OF SAMUEL (THE LAMANITE)

Chapter 5
Premium narration
1
The Councils maintained peace and unity among the people not through coercion but through wise governance and true doctrine, and the people likewise governed themselves without need of force. They held all things in common, eliminating poverty and allowing all to prosper. The community of Hagoth grew rapidly as word of their prosperity spread, drawing immigrants from the Land Southward, including Nephites, Lamanites, Ammonites, and refugees fleeing the Gadianton Robbers who had grown powerful in other northern settlements.
2
To prevent divisions arising from differing ancestries, the People of Hagoth asked the Councils to choose a unifying name. After months of deliberation, the Councils rejected naming themselves after any individual and chose instead Nemen, meaning People of Truth, naming their territory the Lands of Nem. This reflected their conviction that those guided by the Spirit in truth dwelt there.
3
The record notes this tradition persists among many peoples of the Land Northward, who still call themselves The True People in their own tongues.
