Moroni resumes his record after completing the Jaredite abridgment, explaining that he still lives and therefore writes further, though he had not intended to. He notes the savage warfare raging among the Lamanites, who execute any surviving Nephite refusing to deny Christ. Moroni, determined never to deny Him, conceals his identity and wanders alone to preserve his life.

He then preserves words the Savior spoke privately to the twelve Nephite disciples whom He had chosen and ordained by the laying on of hands. Christ instructed them to call upon the Father in His name with earnest prayer, after which they would receive authority to bestow the Holy Ghost upon those on whom they laid their hands, doing so in His name as His apostles do. This teaching was given at His first appearance and heard only by the disciples, not the gathered multitude.
