THE SECOND BOOK OF MORONI
Chapter 8
Premium narration
1
Moroni preserves a letter sent to him by his father Mormon shortly after Moroni's call to the ministry. Mormon expresses joy at his son's commission and prays for his perseverance, but writes chiefly to address a grievous controversy that has arisen among the Nephite believers: the practice of baptizing infants. Having sought revelation on the matter, Mormon reports that the Lord declared little children whole, incapable of sin, freed from the curse of Adam through the Atonement, with circumcision likewise abolished in Christ.
2
To baptize them is therefore solemn mockery, denying Christ's mercy and trusting in dead works. Mormon insists that God is unchangeable and impartial; children who die are alive in Christ, as are those who lack the law. He outlines the true sequence of salvation: faith, repentance, baptism, remission, meekness, the Holy Ghost, perfect love, and endurance.
3
He closes lamenting Nephite pride and impending destruction.
