THE SECOND BOOK OF MORONI
Chapter 9
Premium narration
1
Mormon writes a second letter to Moroni, reporting that he still lives but bears heavy tidings. A recent battle was lost, and beloved commanders Archeantus, Luram, and Emron have fallen with many choice men. Mormon fears the Spirit has ceased striving with the Nephites, since sharp preaching provokes rage and gentle preaching meets hardened hearts.
2
He recounts atrocities on both sides: Lamanites feeding captive women and children the flesh of slain husbands and fathers, and Nephites at Moriantum raping, torturing, and cannibalizing Lamanite daughters as tokens of valor. The army of Zenephi has plundered the widows at Sherrizah, leaving them to die wandering. Mormon judges his own people's wickedness as surpassing the Lamanites' and warns they face Jaredite-style destruction unless they repent.
3
Refusing to commend such a people to God, he commends Moroni instead, urging him to find lift in Christ's atonement, mercy, and the hope of eternal life.
