THE SECOND BOOK OF SAMUEL (THE LAMANITE)
Chapter 10
Premium narration
1
Samuel reflects on how the Savior's words have pierced his own heart, confessing that despite a lifetime of prophetic service he has at times grown proud and neglected to seek confirmation of the Holy Ghost. To warn his posterity, he composes what he calls a song concerning his grandfather Corianton and the reformed harlot Isabel. He recounts how Isabel repented under the preaching of Alma's sons, opened her home to the needy, and was beaten by a wicked merchant named Saneth for refusing to return to her former trade.

Saneth slandered Corianton to Alma, who, acting from paternal pride rather than revelation, publicly rebuked his innocent son; Corianton, also proud, refused to defend himself. From this Samuel draws his central doctrine: prophets are fallible men, not gods, and every soul must seek personal confirmation of the Holy Ghost regarding every teaching, lest idolatry of leaders bring destruction as it did upon the Nephites.
