John is given a measuring reed and commanded to measure the temple, the altar, and the worshippers — leaving out the outer court given to the Gentiles, who tread the holy city forty-two months. Two witnesses prophesy in sackcloth twelve hundred and sixty days, identified as the two olive trees and two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth, with power to shut heaven, turn waters to blood, and smite the earth. The beast slays them in Jerusalem; after three and a half days the Spirit of life raises them and they ascend. The seventh trump sounds, the kingdoms become the Lord's, and the heavenly temple opens to reveal the ark. D&C 77 fixes these witnesses as prophets raised up to the Jews at the gathering, paired servants of the Holy Order patterned on Moses and Elijah, the rod-and-root witness extended into the final hour.
