Three burdens, each set on a watchman pattern. The first against the desert of the sea names Elam and Media rising against the treacherous spoiler; the prophet's body breaks under the seeing, and from the watchtower the cry comes — Babylon is fallen, is fallen — her graven gods shattered, the threshing-floor remnant told plainly what the Lord of hosts has spoken. The second, Dumah, answers from Seir: morning cometh, and also the night — both at once, the dual season the watchman will not collapse into one. The third, against Arabia and Kedar, sets a year's term on the glory of the mighty archers. The watchman office stands central; Babylon's fall is declared before it is seen, and the layered timing — morning and night together — anchors the latter-day reading.
