A song sung in the land of Judah after the lofty city is brought down to the dust. The strong city is opened to the righteous nation that keepeth truth, and Jehovah is named everlasting strength — the Rock of Ages. The chapter moves through travail: Israel has been with child, brought forth wind, wrought no deliverance, owned by other lords. Then the hinge — the dead shall live, the bodies arise, the dew of herbs falls on those who dwell in dust. The command follows: enter into thy chambers, shut the doors, hide for a little moment until the indignation be overpast. This is the resurrection promise paired with the sealed-in pattern of preservation while Jehovah comes out of his place to punish the earth and disclose her covered blood. The travail of Zion births the gathered remnant; the chambers are real shelter for a real people.
