The chapter opens with the righteous perishing while none lay it to heart — the merciful taken away from the evil to come, entering peace and resting in their beds. Jehovah then turns and indicts the covenant people as sons of the sorceress, seed of the adulterer: idolatry under every green tree, child sacrifice in the valleys, beds set on high places, covenants made with other gods, messengers sent to the king (Molech) and debasement unto hell. The parallelism sharpens — spiritual whoredom is named as literal adultery against Jehovah. Yet the turn comes: the high and lofty One who inhabits eternity dwells also with the contrite and humble, reviving them. The casting-up of the highway, the stumblingblock removed, prepares the way for the gathering. Healing is promised to the mourners; peace to him afar off and him near. The wicked remain the troubled sea — no peace.
