Psalms 1
This chapter as transmitted is a composite of verses drawn from across the Psalter — fragments of Psalms 2, 3, 7, 8, 18, 19, 22, 23, 37, 78, 89, 107, 110, 118, 119, 136, 145, 146, 147, 148, 149, and others — assembled without a single governing text. Psalm 110's declaration that Jehovah spoke to David's Lord, placing him at the right hand until enemies become a footstool, and the rod of strength sent out of Zion, carries the clearest prophetic freight: a messianic and Davidic-servant pattern in which the anointed one rules from Zion and receives the nations as inheritance. Psalm 2's decree — 'Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee' — grounds the Father-Son pattern within the covenant of kingship. The sustained voice of Psalm 119 throughout anchors the word of Jehovah as the covenant ground on which the servant stands.
