Spiritual Warfare

The unseen war for the soul — principalities, the armor of God, discernment of spirits, and the refining of the Remnant.

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Ephesians 6:12

I. The War Began Before This World

The adversary is not a metaphor. He is not a symbol for human psychology or institutional corruption. He is a specific being with a specific history — and the war he wages began long before any of us were born. Moses 4:1–4 records it: Satan rebelled before the foundation of the earth, sought to destroy the agency of man, and was cast out of the pre-mortal council. Revelation 12:7–12 describes what followed — war in heaven, Michael and his angels against the dragon — and adds: "And there was war in heaven… and the dragon fought and his angels, and prevailed not." That war did not end when Lucifer was cast out. It continued in a new theater: mortality.

And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, and prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.

Revelation 12:7–8

He brought one-third of the hosts of heaven with him (D&C 29:36), and they labor still — against the souls of men, against covenant families, and against those whom God is preparing for His work. Understanding the war's pre-mortal origin is not abstract theology; it is essential intelligence for surviving the current engagement.

II. How the Adversary Gains Access

The adversary does not attack at random. He attacks through doors that have been opened — through sin, covenant breach, generational bondage, trauma, occult involvement, and pride. His method is always the same: he offers the counterfeit of God's covenant — a shortcut to power, pleasure, or knowledge that bypasses the ordinance and inverts the covenant. 2 Nephi 2:11–16 establishes the theological necessity of the adversary: opposition in all things is required for agency and growth. This does not mean we welcome his work — it means we understand that the pressure is proportional to the calling. The Remnant is being refined precisely because it is being prepared.

III. The Armor of God — Not Metaphor

Paul's armor of God passage in Ephesians 6:10–18 is the clearest doctrinal summary of spiritual warfare protocol in the New Testament. Each piece corresponds to a covenant protection — not spiritual wellness advice but specific defensive equipment for the covenant-keeper in an active combat zone.

  • Belt of truth — alignment with what is actually real, not the adversary's narrative about your calling or your failure
  • Breastplate of righteousness — covenant keeping that protects the heart, the seat of will and desire
  • Feet shod with the gospel of peace — standing firm in covenant and ready to move at the Lord's word
  • Shield of faith — active trust in the Lord that intercepts and extinguishes the fiery darts of accusation, doubt, and despair
  • Helmet of salvation — the assurance of calling and election that protects the mind from spiritual deception
  • Sword of the Spirit — the living word of God, spoken with authority; the only offensive weapon listed

IV. Discernment, Deliverance, and Priesthood Authority

The gift of discerning of spirits (1 Corinthians 12:10; D&C 46:23) is the spiritual capacity to perceive the source of any influence — whether it is of God, of man, or of the adversary. The Lord gave practical instructions in D&C 129: a holy angel will shake hands with tangible substance; a spirit of a just man made perfect will also; but the devil's emissary "will offer you their hands, and you shall not feel anything; you will therefore detect him." The test is real and physical.

The authority to cast out unclean spirits was among the first powers the Lord conferred on His disciples (Mark 1:25–27; Luke 10:17–20). That authority belongs to those who hold the Holy Order and exercise it in faith. Casting out is not a technique; it is covenant authority exercised over an inferior kingdom. Those who hold the keys of the kingdom are greater than those who hold the keys of death — if they stand in that authority.

Important

Spiritual warfare at the societal level is Babylon — the great and abominable church of the devil described in 1 Nephi 13–14. Babylon is not primarily a political system: it is a spiritual counterfeit of Zion. It offers community without covenant, meaning without truth, and belonging without righteousness. Recognizing it requires the same discernment that recognizes a false angel — knowing what the real thing looks like.
